Sea-Style Weaving Adventurer – Weaving Wonderful Memories Fakong is an indigenous Amis tribe in Hualien County’s Fengbin Township. It has preserved its traditional youth training system, as well as rites and ceremonies. Located at the foot of a sacred mountain, it is well suited for walking. In the Amis language, Fakong is referring to the spider lilies along the coast. It is said that when the ancestors came to this place, they saw spider lilies everywhere. At night, the surfaces of their leaves weakly reflect the moonlight. The tribe was named for this phenomenon. This also demonstrates the talent and mission of its residents in the traditional uses of plants.

. As you enter this community, you will see traditional structures made with time-honored construction methods, in addition to abundant and diverse workshops that produce traditional handicrafts. These include bamboo weaving, umbrella plant weaving, ramie weaving, liquor distillation, and pickled pork making. There are Ina and Faki (female and male elders, respectively) who are proficient in traditional crafts production. They shoulder the important mission of passing on centuries-old skills. Travelers encounter ancient techniques and traditional flavors, as they experience weaving with natural materials and taste glutinous rice liquor, pickled pork, and glutinous rice dishes.

. Upon your arrival to the Fakong Tribe, listen to stories told by its residents. This indigenous Amis community is not only a place for admiring traditional indigenous construction methods and wisdom, but also for experiencing traditional weaving techniques, food, and liquor.

The Experience

👉Weaving of Good Times The residents of the Fakong Tribe produce a diversity of handicrafts, mostly from plant materials obtained from nature, such as ramie, umbrella plant, rattan, and bamboo. Ina and Faki (female and male elders, respectively) are proficient in traditional artisanal techniques and are passing on ancient crafts making wisdom. Watch as they process raw materials and knead and weave them with skillful hands, turning them into practical and beautiful items. Then, learn how to weave plant materials yourself in the Fakong! Create an umbrella plant coaster or ramie bag to take home with you and use.

. 👉Fakong Tribe Walking Tour Map The Fakong Tribe is located at the foot of the sacred mountain known as Cilangasan. It is the largest indigenous Amis community in Hualien County’s Fengbin Township and has a long history. The Amis culture permeates every corner. So, go for a walk, listen to stories told by its residents, admire traditional structures, and experience the Amis lifestyle.

. 👉Tasting Traditional Fermented Flavors The Amis tribe has a long history of liquor making. Before each harvest festival, the women of the community produce their own fermentation starter for distilling glutinous rice liquor. In the past, before there were refrigerators, fermentation was a way of preserving food and became part of this community’s food culture. Visit the Fakong Tribe at the foot of a sacred mountain and taste its unique glutinous rice liquor, glutinous rice dishes, and Silaw (pickled pork).
